Where To Stay In Galle
As soon as you enter this 3 bedroom private villa, it radiates ‘Instagram-worthy’ vibes. The art and charming colonial interiors captivate the senses and the small plunge pool is a refreshing escape from the heat.

There are three en-suite bedrooms, with the upstairs master being particularly impressive. Spacious and beautifully decorated. It features an outdoor terrace that opens off the room, offering the perfect vantage point to watch the sunset.

The second bedroom opens up to the plunge pool and includes a bath in the en-suite. The third bedroom is a cozy twin, offering a cool and comfortable retreat.
The downstairs communal area provides the perfect setting for breakfast, afternoon tea or simply spending quality time with friends and family.
Breakfast was very good. We had to pre-order the night before and choose between a Sri Lankan or Western style. The food kept flowing until we had to ask them to stop as we were too full to eat any more.
The housekeeper was extremely attentive and nothing was too much trouble for him. He was able to assist with a trip to Jungle Beach in Unawatuna and help with points of interest in the Fort.
Final Thoughts
An absolute gem of a private villa – with a perfect setting, prime location and outstanding service. For six guests, its incredible value for money per person.
Review of Le Grand Galle

Location:
The hotel is located a short 10 minute walk from the famous Galle Fort where you can explore historic streets, shops and cafes. It’s also just a 15 minute drive to Unawatuna’s beaches. Perfect for families, couples & Single Travelers looking for a little luxury and relaxation.
Length of stay:
I stayed at Le Grand Galle for 2 nights mid week in November.
Where To Stay In Galle
A luxurious retreat with Ocean Views Le Grand Galle offers a serene escape, perched on the edge of the Indian Ocean. Where nearly every room boasts panoramic views of the sparkling blue waters.
As you enter the hotel, your eyes are immediately drawn to breathtaking views of the sea. The sound of the waves gently crashing against the shore complements the rich, sophisticated interior design, creating a sense of peace and tranquility.
Check in was seamless. The front desk staff were incredibly welcoming, offering helpful tips about local attractions and dining spots. I was also offered a complimentary welcome fresh fruit drink and cold towel. Giving me more time to soak in the atmosphere before I was shown to my room.

Room Review – Super Deluxe Room with Sea View
This room exuded luxury and comfort. Located on the higher floor, the balcony offered sweeping views of the Indian Ocean making it feel like a true retreat.
The super deluxe room was spacious , well lit and beautifully decorated with soothing colors that made it feel both elegant and cozy. The huge bed was incredibly comfortable with soft, high quality linens, ensuring a restful nights sleep. The room was meticulously clean, with every detail thoughtfully designed.

The room was equipped with all modern amenities you’d expect, including air conditioning, TV with international channels and a well stocked mini bar.
The bathroom was a luxurious experience, featuring a rain shower, deep bathtub and automated talking toilet (which I found very amusing).
The standout feature of this room was undoubtedly the view. Waking up in the morning to the sight of the shimmering sea and sound of gentle waves crashing against the rocks. It really did feel like I was in my own little paradise.
Suite with Spa Bath
This room was much larger than the Super Deluxe with a separate living area and bigger bathroom area. The balcony also has a hot tub so you can let the bubbles soothe you while taking in the views.
There is quite a significant price difference between the two rooms, but if I had to choose which one I preferred I would say the cheaper super deluxe room with sea view. The layout just suited me better and I like to watch TV in bed to drift off too. I found the Suite too big and didn’t really use the separate living area or the have time to use the hot tub. For families. however, having this extra space would be perfect.
Infinity Pool

The hotels infinity pool offers a breathtaking perspective, allowing guests to swim while soaking up the views of the ocean that seem to stretch endlessly into the horizon. For me it was the highlight. Watching the sun go down was nothing short of magical. There is also a staffed beach bar where you can order snacks and ice cold drinks.
Beyond the pool, if you walk to the edge of the hotel, there is a small private beach area. Which is great if you want to take a dip in calmer waters.
Dining Options
Both mornings I went down for the buffet breakfast. The indoor area of the restaurant was a little chilly for me (AC worked very well), so I opted to sit outside on the decking, with views of the Fort walls. I’m not a big eater at breakfast so I found the available food options were sufficient. Fresh fruit, toast, omelette cooked to order. They also had cereals, pastries, Sri Lankan and international cooked options.
For Dinner there are 2 restaurants available
Blue – Fresh Seafood
Taste – Buffet style and al a cart options
Final Thoughts
Overall, Le Grand Galle Hotel exceeded my expectations. The combination of excellent service, beautiful views and prime location makes it a fantastic choice for anyone visiting Galle. I would highly recommend it for families and couples looking for a peaceful and luxurious stay.
The Bartizan Galle Fort

Location
Inside Galle Fort. Prime location to watch out of this world sunsets.
Length of stay
2 nights during November 2024
Where To Stay In Galle
If you are seeking a hotel that feels less like a commercial stay and more like a journey into Galle’s soul, The Bartizan is a hidden gem that captures the essence of the city’s history and charm.
This is an intimate hotel, found on the edge of the Fort , overlooking the ramparts and Indian Ocean. Absolute prime position for watching sunsets.
The moment you step into the Bartizan you’re transported to another era. The hotels colonial architecture is complemented by the wood finishes, vintage decor and traditional Sri Lankan accents. There is an intimate courtyard where you can enjoy afternoon tea or breakfast.
The ambience is cozy, inviting and unpretentious, there is no grand lobby, but the space still feels luxurious in a quiet understated way.
Room Review

I stayed in a Superior Balcony Room with sea view and I can honestly say it’s a beautiful space. You can see the Fort walls and ocean from the balcony. There is a mix of old world charm and modern touches. In the room is a Fridge, tea & coffee facilities. Of note there is no TV, but when there is so much to see in Galle, this is not a bad thing.
Separate toilet and rain shower with my favorite brand, Spa Ceylon complementary toiletries and fluffy towels. Large comfortable bed, with quality bed linen and good pillows. And nice quiet cool AC, what more could you ask for.
The courtyard room is a good option if you are on a budget. It doesn’t have the views and can be a little noisy in the mornings, but you still get the breakfast and comfortable nights rest.
Dining Options/ Facilities

There is no on site restaurant in the hotel, so for dinner you will need to eat outside. The hotel does however, provide breakfast. In the room is a little card that you fill out indicating if you would like to eat in the downstairs courtyard or on the room balcony. Then there are boxes you tick choosing the items you would like for breakfast. And let me tell you breakfast does not disappoint in this place. There was so much food, it will keep you going for days.. Definitely ranked in my top 3 hotel breakfasts of all time.
There are no swimming pools in this property, however most properties inside the Fort don’t have one. For those of you that like a swim, there is a nice little beach with clear waters 5 minute walk towards the Lighthouse.
Top Tip – You can find a small rooftop terrace in the hotel, which offers the best sunset views in the Fort. And no need to join the crowds!

Final Thoughts
This is one of my favorite hotels to stay in when visiting Galle. It’s small, cosy and intimate. The room interiors match the vibe of Galle Fort and the location is perfect for exploring the town.
Review Of Ginganga Lodge

Length of Stay
2 nights in January
Location
Situated on the outskirts of Galle (15 minute drive from Galle Fort)
Where To Stay In Galle
This is one of those places that leaves you saying ‘wow’ when you arrive. Nestled amidst the serene landscape of Galle the Ginganga Lodge offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The setting really is idyllic, quiet, peaceful, surrounded by lush greenery, but still only a 15 tuk tuk ride to Galle Fort.
Room Review
I stayed in a Delux Premier room, which was actually a beautiful detached villa in the hotel gardens. Inside, was a stunning 4 poster bed, fridge, tea/coffee making facilities, reading area and tropical outdoor bathroom. No TV in this room, but again you won’t miss it. The bathroom was very private, but parts of it were outdoors.

Now I’m not usually a fan of outdoor bathrooms and I have a funny story to explain why.. As someone who appreciates modern amenities, I never thought I would be up close and personal with nature quite like I did in Thailand. I was staying in a cute little jungle hut and by day it was magical. Night one, after a long day of exploring, I decided to brave the outdoor bathroom. What could go wrong, right? Well let me tell you -the outdoors had plans of its own.
Bathroom Break
I opened the door to the bathroom only to have a bat fly towards me. It zipped out of the doorway like it had a meeting it was late for. I stood frozen for a moment, wondering if I was in a nature documentary and if so which animal was going to be the next star.
I cautiously approached the toilet, but the sight that greeted me wasn’t what I expected. There, perched on the inside ledge was a frog, sitting like it owned the space. As if that wasn’t enough, the whole experience took a ‘jumanji’ turn when a shrieking beetle (yes shrieking) flew past my head. And I’m pretty sure it was angry. But I didn’t have time to find out. As I glanced at the sink I could see the ants had made their grand entrance, swarming all over my toothbrush and toothpaste like they were at an all you can eat buffet.
I took one look at the chaotic scene around me, turned around and ran back into the room. Let’s just say I became very appreciative of indoor plumbing and the safety of four walls from that moment.
Anyway, I digress, even though the Ginganga Lodge bathroom was partially outdoors, I am pleased to report it was a much calmer user experience and actually quite liberating having an outdoor shower (it is completely private by the way.)

The pool area is simply stunning and during my time there I had it all to myself.
Dining Options:
Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner available in a beautifully designed open plan restaurant. The design really makes you feel at one with nature.
Breakfast was cooked to order, tasted yummy and was lovingly presented. What more could you ask for?

Final Thoughts:
Great hotel in a tropical jungle setting. Plenty of open space, large pool making it perfect for families. Feels like you are a million miles away from anywhere, but actually only a short 15 minute drive to Galle Fort.
Review Of Jetwing LightHouse Hotel
Length of Stay
1 Night in November
Location
Set on its own private beach and just a short 5 minute drive from Gale Fort
Where to Stay In Galle
If you are looking for a perfect blend of luxury, history and stunning coastal views, Jetwing Lighthouse Hotel is an absolute gem. I spontaneously ended up staying here and lets just say after a stressful start to the day this was exactly what I needed to lift my spirits.
The hotel itself is a masterpiece of design because of its unique combination of modern luxury and traditional Sri Lankan charm.
Room Review
The rooms are minimalist with vibrant accents of color. I stayed in a Luxury Room which had a view of the sea. Waking up to that view in the morning felt like I was in my own little paradise. The room had all the usual amenities, fridge, TV with international channels and one of the biggest beds Ive slept in. The bathroom was super luxurious with fluffy towels and robes.

During my stay I treated myself to a full body massage in the spa. The massage was pure bliss, just the right amount of pressure easing away every bit of tension. By the end I felt completely refreshed and at ease. So, if you have the time I would highly recommend visiting the spa.
Final Thoughts
I normally opt for smaller boutique style hotels, but I was pleasantly surprised with this one. The secure grounds are stunning and the private beach clean and safe to swim. One of the highlight was watching hundreds of tiny crabs confidently strutting out of their old shell, only for another crab to swoop in like a bargain shopper grabbing the last item on sale. It was like a tiny crustacean version of ‘Trading Places’ but with more sideways walking and less movie magic.
Apologies, I keep getting distracted. Writing these travel blogs has a way of taking me back and bring up memories I’d forgotten. But I guess thats the whole point – to share my experiences and hopefully help you make some decisions for your next adventure!
Review of Bastille

Length of Stay
1 night
Location
Right in the heart of Galle Fort, so perfect for exploring the town.
This is not so much a hotel, but has the feel of a quaint guest house. There is no reception. The main access is via the restaurant, but staff are on hand to assist with check in.
Room Review
During my stay at Bastille Galle, I opted for the Deluxe double room with balcony. The room is fairly basic and small, but clean with good working AC. The bed was comfy and it was nice that I could watch TV in the evening if needed. Of note the room did not have tea/coffee making facilities, but you can just pop downstairs and grab a drink. Breakfast was included in the room rate. I had my usual toast and omelette.
There was a little music noise later in the evening but this all stopped around 22:00hrs. To be honest, I was so tired from walking around the Fort all afternoon that the noise didn’t really bother me.
The selling point of this guest house is its location. Situated on the main Pedlar street it offers perfect access to all Galle Fort has to offer.
