Need Help Planning The Perfect trip To Sri lanka
I want to make it easy for anyone. Regardless of budget, travel experience, or group size, to confidently plan a memorable trip from start to finish.
Why I Needed To Extend My 30 Day ETA Tourist Visa In Sri Lanka
I originally booked my Sri Lanka trip for 5 weeks. Fully aware before arriving that the standard tourist ETA is only valid for 30 days (I applied for the 30 day visa prior to travelling). I knew I’d need to extend at some point, but life had other plans too (more on that later). When I landed at Colombo airport I was a little worried there might have be an issue. As my return flight was booked more than 30 days later and I hadn’t applied for the extension online beforehand. However, that worry was short lived. When I went through passport control, the officer just commented that I needed to extend my visa before the initial 30 day ETA expired and waived me through. Success! The holiday could begin.
Now for the unexpected. I found out that the company I worked for had gone into administration, meaning I suddenly no longer had a job waiting for me back home. Instead of panicking, I choose to look at it differently.
With no immediate rush to return, I decided to turn misfortune into a positve. This was a sign and the perfect opportunity to stay longer in a country I fall in love with more and more every time I visit (also the warmer weather here may have also played a small role in my thought process). Extending my visa meant more time to explore Sri Lanka and more experiences to share with you here.

Online Vs In-Person Tourist Visa Extension In Sri Lanka
Trying To Extend My Visa Online
Sri Lanka does allow tourist visa extensions online and this is usually the easiest option.
However, when I tried to extend mine both before I travelled and when I was in Sri lanka, the website wouldn’t allow me to upload or download my passport photos properly. After multiple attempts and no success, I decided to try the in-person visa extension option at the immigration office in Colombo.
Where To Extend A Tourist Visa In Sri Lanka (In Person)
A tourist visa extension in Sri Lanka can be completed at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo.

First Impressions
As soon as I stepped out of the tuk tuk, a man approached me telling me I needed a passport photo and tried to get me to follow him. I already had a photo, politely declined and walked through security. No issues. There were a lot of people outside the building and it can seem little overwhelming, but everyone just wanted to help in there own way.
Security staff were very helpful and immediately directed me to the 4th floor, where visa extensions are handled.

The building itself is:
- Modern
- Temperature controlled (a blessing in Colombo heat)
- Clean, organised and easy to navigate.

Step By Step: How I Extended My Tourist Visa In Sri Lanka (In Person)
Once inside the visa extension area, things can feel a little confusing at first. Mainly because there are different zones and steps and its not always obvious if your standing in the right place.
The good news? Staff are friendly and helpful and everything is clearly done by a ticket number system.
Step 1: Collect and Complete The Application Form

When you enter the main room:
Directly ahead is a booth
Next to the booth is a small table where you will find the visa application forms.
The form is:
- Written in English
- Easy & quick to complete with straightforward questions.
Bring a pen – I didn’t see any available
Step 2: Attach Your Passport Photo
Turn to face the entrance and on the right hand side you will see another desk area, here you will find:
- Glue sticks
- An area where you can attach your passport photo.
You must stick your photo to the application form before you hand it in at the booth.
Step 3: Hand In The Form & Receive A Ticket Number
Take your completed form to the booth
You’ll receive a numbered ticket
I was told to go straight to zone B, although I later realised I may have missed a small registration step with the ticket number. I will explain what happened below.

Step 4: Zone B – Waiting & Interview Area
To reach zone B:
- Walk back towards to elevators
- The room is on the left hand side
Inside you’ll find:
- Rows of chairs
- Screens showing tickets numbers
- Small interview rooms behind the screens
When your number is called, you would normally go for a brief interview.
In my case, when my number should have been next, it skipped entirely. I waited a little longer and when my number still didn’t come up, I showed my ticket to a member of staff. They took my passport and application form and told me to go to the payment zone.
Step 5: Payment Zone
Payment takes place back in the first main room.
Again, everything is done by ticket number:
Sit and wait until your number appears on the screen. Once you see it, you can pay at the counter. Payment cannot be made until your number is called.
Payment methods include cash & card. I extended my visa for 60 days and the cost was $100. However, after speaking to a couple of other holiday makers who were extending their visa by a week and 1 month the $100 fee seemed to be the same regardless of extension period. I asked to pay in Sri Lankan Rupees (LKR), the clerk just converted the amount payable.
After paying I was given a receipt and directed to the final waiting area.
Step 6: Collecting Your Passport
In the final area (same room):
Sit and wait until your number is called. When called, you collect your passport. Which should contain a small visa extension sticker, officially confirming your extended stay in Sri Lanka.

How Long Did The Sri Lanka Visa Extension Take?
Total time 3.5hrs
Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised.
For a government immigration process, this felt amazingly efficient. A few hours of waiting is a fair exchange to spend more time in this beautiful country. I’m just really happy that Sri Lanka even offers a visa extension option. Many other countries I have visited don’t, and once your initial entry visa runs out you have to leave. So yeah, smiles all round.
Important Things To Know Before Extending Your 30 Day ETA Tourist Visa In Sri Lanka

⭕️ Single Entry Only
A tourist visa extension is for singly entry only. This means if you leave Sri Lanka (for example to visit the Maldives) your visa extension is automatically cancelled. You must then apply for a new ETA, starting again with the standard 30 day tourist visa.
I was considering travelling for a few days to the Maldives as it’s only an hours flight away. I’d found some really nice budget accommodation options and a return flight was under $250. However, I was unsure if I could apply for another 30 day ETA visa after leaving the country for only a few days. Something to explore for next time I think?
⭕️ Apply early, don’t leave it until the last few days of your valid 30 day tourist visa running out. I did mine around 10 days before my 30 day visa expired, just in case there were any issues.
Based on what I saw, make sure you arrive at the Department of Immigration before 12:30hrs to allow enough time to process the visa extension on the same day. Just be aware that the ticket issuing counter/booth (step 3) closes around 13:30hrs. Once it closes you will not be able to have your visa extension processed that day.
Is It Worth Extending Your Tourist Visa In Sri Lanka?
Absolutely.
Sri Lanka is the kind of country that rewards slow travel. Extending my visa gave me:
- Time to travel without rushing
- Space to process unexpected life changes
- More opportunities to explore, write and share experiences.
- What started as a simple holiday, turned into something much more meaningful and extending my 30 day ETA tourist visa made that possible.
