If you’ve read any of my previous blog posts, you’ll know I’ve practically moved into Sri Lanka. Seriously, I’ve been there so many times, I’m starting to lose count. I’m typically more of a “city hustle” or “jungle adventure” kind of traveler, surrounded by wildlife and the occasional monkey stealing my snacks. But on my most recent trip, I decided to shake things up (because why not?) and visit a place that’s completely outside my comfort zone—Hiriketiya. So lets go exploring Hiriketiya Sri Lanka together in this ultimate travel guide.

Guess what? This small beach town on the south coast of Sri Lanka did something no beach has ever done before. It actually won me over. So, let’s talk about why Hiriketiya might just make you rethink your next getaway. Spoiler: it’s not just about sand and waves.

Overview- Why Visit Hiriketiya?

Here’s a quick overview, if you’re considering exploring Hiriketiya, Sri Lanka:

  1. Beautiful Beaches: Ideal for surfing, swimming, and relaxing by the ocean.
  2. Surf Culture: Known for its surf spots and vibrant surf scene.
  3. Boutique Accommodation: Cozy, boutique hotels offering jungle and sea views.
  4. Yoga and Wellness: Daily yoga classes and spas for relaxation.
  5. Local Shops: Unique boutiques selling locally made beachwear and boho-style clothing.
  6. Cafes and Restaurants: A variety of eateries offering fresh seafood, Sri Lankan dishes, and healthy options.
  7. Scenic Views: Stunning vistas of the bay and surrounding hills.
  8. Peaceful Yet Lively: A great balance of tranquility and evening entertainment.
  9. Local Culture: Friendly locals and a laid-back vibe perfect for unwinding.
  10. Active Adventure: Hiking, surfing, and exploring the natural beauty of the area

What Makes Hiriketiya Different?

Now, if you’re like me and usually prefer being knee-deep in city life or trekking through dense jungles (with just enough wildlife to keep you on your toes), the idea of a beach town might not exactly send you running for your suitcase. But here’s the kicker: Hiriketiya isn’t just any beach.

Imagine a little slice of paradise that’s chill, but not too chill. It’s got the perfect balance of quiet seclusion and enough life to keep it interesting. The turquoise waters are as inviting as a warm hug. The palm trees are just the right amount of “Instagram-ready,” and the vibe? It’s basically laid-back beach goals without the party crowd or overpriced cocktails (thankfully).

Oh and the monkeys! They definitely have a way of adding some charm to the place. My first night at Serene Villa was unforgettable—thanks to a surprise upgrade to the top floor. The views from the 3rd floor were like something out of a nature documentary, with a bird’s-eye view over the trees and the bay. From my balcony, I watched as monkeys casually leapt from tree to tree. Like they were training for the next big circus performance. At one point, one of them even strutted up to the balcony, nonchalantly eyeing the flower it had clearly decided was its midnight snack. Meanwhile, I was just an afterthought—totally invisible in the process.

There’s a little sign on the balcony door that gently advises guests not to leave any belongings outside. You know, just in case the monkeys develop a taste for your sunglasses, flip-flops, or maybe your phone (because apparently, they’re into souvenirs too).

When Is The Best Time To Visit Hiriketiya?

The best time to go exploring Hiriketiya Sri Lanka is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. This is when you’ll get sunny skies, warm weather, and minimal rainfall. Perfect for beach lounging, surfing, and pretending you’re in a travel brochure.

If you’re a surfer, November to March is peak surf season, with great waves and the occasional “I’m a pro” moment (even if you’re still wiping out). But, if you prefer a quieter vibe with fewer tourists, try the shoulder months of April or October. You’ll still get nice weather, minus the crowds. And maybe even a bit of space on the beach to stretch out without a battle for prime sunbathing real estate.

And if you’re into peace, solitude, and don’t mind the occasional tropical downpour, the off-season (May to October) can offer a more relaxed experience. Just be prepared to swap beach time for a bit of rain dancing and possibly finding the perfect excuse to enjoy an extra cup of tea indoors.

Things to Do in Hiriketiya:

Surfing (Or, Pretending to Surf)

Okay, full disclosure, I didn’t catch any waves myself (I prefer to keep my dignity intact), but Hiriketiya’s surf scene is legit. If you’re into surfing—or even if you’re just pretending to be—this is the place. The waves here are perfect for both beginners and pros. You can rent a board, get a lesson from one of the local surf instructors (who are way cooler than I’ll ever be). And maybe even impress a few people with your “skills.” A 1hr, 30min lesson will cost around LKR 5000 (£13.50) and includes board hire.

Just… Relax

If you’re not about that surf life, no worries. Hiriketiya’s beach is ideal for doing nothing. Like, literally nothing. Just plop yourself on the sand, let the sound of the waves lull you into a peaceful nap (or maybe just a solid sunburn). And don’t forget to bring a good book or, if you’re like me, pretend to read while you secretly people-watch.

Beach Club Vibes – Yes Please! (La Playa)

A particularly noteworthy beach hangout was La Playa. The spot where you can pretend to be a beachside influencer without actually having to look like one. Located directly on the beach, this place is perfect for those days when you want to lounge in style without breaking the bank. Picture this: sunloungers lined up, a pool to dip in, and all the food and drinks your heart desires. It’s got that beach club vibe (click here for Beach Cover-Ups So Good, You’ll Forget They’re Just for the Beach).

Now, here’s the deal: It can get busy, so if you’re not about the whole “fighting for a sunbed” experience, I’d recommend booking your lounger the day before. Don’t worry, you won’t be charged for it, but they do expect that you’ll order food or drinks while you soak up the sun (because, let’s face it, no one’s just hanging out without sipping on a coconut or a cold beer).

What I loved about La Playa is that the prices are super reasonable. The food is delicious, the drinks are cold, and you can just relax while the waves roll in. It’s the perfect spot if you want to chill, people-watch, and pretend you’re living your best beach life without actually spending like you are.

Explore the Town of Hiriketiya:

The vibe of Hiriketiya is undeniably “chill. The town’s a perfect blend of local charm with a few hip cafes and quirky shops to keep you entertained. You’ll stumble upon art galleries, cozy restaurants serving up incredible Sri Lankan curry, and the occasional yoga retreat offering “downward dog” by the sea (if that’s your thing).

Shopping – What to buy

If you’re in the mood to add something unique to your wardrobe, Hiriketiya has a bunch of boutique surf and beach wear shops that sell locally made clothing. One standout is ‘Slow Days’, a charming little store that’s perfect for picking up stylish swimwear and beautiful boho-style clothing. It’s the kind of place where you’ll find that perfect beachy outfit you didn’t know you needed. Whether it’s a flowy dress for sunset cocktails or some chic swimwear that’ll make you feel like you belong in a tropical fashion shoot. Plus, you’ll be supporting local artisans—so it’s basically a win-win

There are also a couple of small convenience stores for all your essentials like water, snacks and if your anything like me, forgotten toiletries.

Evening Entertainment

For such a small town, Hiriketiya sure knows how to throw a good evening party! As I strolled around, restaurants and beach bars were practically throwing leaflets at me like confetti, all promising live music, DJs, and—of course—happy hour deals. It’s like they’re saying, “Come for the vibes, stay for the bonus drink!”

The Cost of My 3-Day Getaway to Hiriketiya

So, when I first started planning my trip to go exploring Hiriketiya Sri Lanka, I had all the best intentions. You know, the classic “I’ll stick to a backpacker-style budget, embrace public transport like a true adventurer, and spend my nights in budget accommodation.” I even bought a backpack to really commit to the lifestyle (because nothing says “I’m a budget traveler” like buying a new backpack, right?).

Sticking To A Budget

But here’s the thing: the best intentions are often best left in the planning phase. This trip? Yeah, it was no exception. I started off on the right foot with my “backpacker” mindset, but the minute my alarm went off at 5 a.m. (to catch a bus, because let’s be real, public transport is not my friend), I quickly remembered that sleep is my true passion. So, like the princess I am, I decided a private taxi from Colombo to Hiriketiya was a much more fitting option for someone of my delicate constitution.

But I didn’t go too crazy on the accommodation. (I stuck with mid-range—promise!), although that did mean my room came with AC and a fan that actually worked. Of course, then I proceeded to blow my “budget” on food and shopping. Hey, I had to try all the local dishes for you lovely people, right? All in the name of research, of course.

So, after 3 days of living my best life (and not adhering to any sort of budget), here’s how much my trip to Hiriketiya ended up costing me:

➡️ Hotels – £115

➡️ Food & Drink – £35

➡️ Taxi from Colombo to Hiriketiya – £52

➡️ New Clothes – £25

➡️ Total – £227

(I travelled alone, so if you were travelling with a companion you could half the costs of travel & accomodation). There are of course cheaper and more expensive accomodation options available. All of which I will go into more detail in my next blog.

Cost of Local Activities:

I didn’t partake this time round. But just in case it helps with your budgeting I have added the cost of some activities below:

➡️ Surf lesson – around £13.50

➡️ 1 hr massage – around £16.00

➡️ Tuk Tuk from Hiriketiya to Marissa – around £11

Reality check:

Could I have gone exploring Hiriketiya Sri Lanka on a tighter budget? Absolutely. But where’s the fun in that? Sometimes, a little splurge (okay, a few splurges) is necessary for the authentic travel experience… or at least that’s what I keep telling myself. At the end of the day, it was worth it for the memories, the food, and the excessive shopping. I mean, I had to buy those souvenirs, right?

So, there you have it—my 3-day trip to Hiriketiya in all its glorious, budget-busting splendor. Next time, I swear I’ll stick to my budget. Or at least until the first delicious plate of Sri Lankan curry arrives.

Where to Stay:

Serene Villa Hiriketiya (click link to book)

Cost £57 per night, room only

I spent two nights exploring Hiriketiya Sri Lanka, and my first night was at Serene Villa, which is nestled at the top of a hill. The hotel gives off a rustic, jungle vibe that made me feel like Tarzan—if Tarzan had a penchant for luxury and polished concrete. The interiors were a mix of wood and concrete, so you can tell they’re going for the whole “earthy chic” vibe, perfect for someone who wants to be one with nature but also not sleep on rocks.

When I was hunting for somewhere to stay, I noticed Serene Villa offered rooms with various bed arrangements—ideal for families or groups of people who don’t mind occasionally arguing over who gets the best bed. I originally booked a triple room on the ground floor, but when I arrived, I got upgraded to the Deluxe Apartment at the very top. Now, just a heads up—there were a lot of steep steps to climb to get there, so I had to ask myself, “Am I here for the view or my cardio?” But once I reached the top, I was rewarded with a view so stunning, I almost forgave the mini workout.

The room was spacious enough to host a small family reunion, complete with a massive bed, a cozy seating area, and a kitchenette for those who like to pretend they’re chefs on vacation. The location is perfect—close to the beach, restaurants, and all the little conveniences that make life easier when you’re too busy being on vacation to care about the details.

Yoga Lesson Anyone?

For those who like to start the day with some zen, yoga lessons are offered daily at 8:30 am and 4:30 pm for just LKR 3000 (around £8). Perfect for limbering up before you dive into a feast! Oh, and if you’re in need of some serious relaxation, there’s a nail bar and spa on-site. Because, let’s be honest, nothing says “vacation” like getting your nails done while listening to the sound of monkeys playing in the trees for background music.

Haven Beach Hiriketiya (click link to book)

Cost £58 per night including breakfast

Night 2 exploring Hiriketiya Sri Lanka was spent at ‘Haven Beach Hiriketiya’, which is actually part of Serene Villas—just at the bottom of the hill, right on the edge of the sea. And when I say right on the edge, I mean it’s so close to the water that, as soon as you go to bed, you can hear the waves crashing like they’re sending you a bedtime lullaby. It’s got this laid-back, no-frills vibe—no fancy facilities, just a room (ask for a room on the high floor for better views). But, lucky for me, I had access to all the amenities at Serene Villa, which was just a 5-minute walk up the hill. So, if I wanted to pretend I was working out for a good cause, I could hike up for a spa day or yoga session.

This time, my room rate included breakfast, so in keeping with the whole “healthy beach vibe,” I opted for the healthy option—because nothing says “I’m on vacation” like pretending to eat clean. The room itself still had that earthy vibe, but with a slightly more modern touch, and it was centrally located, so you’re closer to the action. It did get a bit noisier in the evening with music from the neighboring restaurants, but by 10:00 pm, it was like the universe hit the “mute” button, and all that was left was the calming sound of the sea—much better than any white noise machine I could buy.

It was the perfect mix of beachy and peaceful, like a front-row seat to nature’s concert, with a side of good food and great vibes.

Where To Eat

You’re really spoiled for choice when it comes to tasty food in Hiriketiya! I was only there for 3 days, so I didn’t have time to try them all (though trust me, I tried my best). But here are the spots I did manage to squeeze in (full where to eat blog coming soon):

Bacuzzi

This is a very chic pizzeria that brings a slice of Italy to Hiriketiya. With imported Italian ingredients that elevate their pizza to next-level deliciousness. The ambiance is on point, with a chilled vibe and stylish interiors that make it feel a bit fancy, but still relaxed. I’d say it’s more on the high-end side, but totally worth it for the amazing pizza. And seriously, don’t leave without trying the ginger, lime, and lemonade drink. It’s super refreshing and might just become your new favorite holiday beverage.

La Luna Hiri

This is a great little spot if you need to get some laptop work done while still soaking in the laid-back vibes of Hiriketiya. With solid Wi-Fi and a relaxed atmosphere, it’s perfect for a productive day (or just pretending to be productive). The menu offers a nice selection of local dishes, plus some amazing brunch options. And whatever you do, make sure you try Coco’s French Kiss—it’s like a work of art on a plate and tastes just as good as it looks. Trust me, it’s a must-try!

Beach Bus Restaurant

Yes, you read that right—it’s actually a bus! And not just any bus, but one that’s been transformed into a charming little beachfront eatery. This quirky spot quickly became one of my favorites. Right on the beach, with twinkling lights in the palm trees and a chilled vibe, it’s like dining in a beachy dream. The menu serves up fresh seafood and local cuisine that’ll make your taste buds do a happy dance. And the best part? It’s the cheapest place I ate in Hiriketiya, which means you can splurge on dessert (or another drink, no judgment). There aren’t many tables, so if you want a seat, get there before 7:30 pm—otherwise, you might end up standing, or worse, staring longingly at the people who got there earlier. But honestly, it’s totally worth the early hustle for the amazing food and that laid-back beach

Muthu Bar & Restaurant

Perfect for a beer, listening to the waves and watching the surfers.

Roti Hut

Great for a cheap Sri Lankan snack.

Tips for Your Visit:

Staying and indeed exploring Hiriketiya, Sri Lanka is like stepping into a laid-back paradise, but there are a few tips that’ll help you make the most of your stay:

Embrace the Monkeys

They’re not just cute; they’re part of the charm. But also, keep your belongings inside! They’re notorious for “borrowing” things—whether it’s your snacks, sunglasses, or a cheeky photo from your phone.

Get Ready for Steep Hills

Many places, like Serene Villa, are perched on top of hills, so expect a few (or a lot) of steep steps. It’s a mini workout, but the view at the top makes it worth it. Maybe skip the flip-flops for a pair of sturdy shoes if you’re planning to climb a lot!

Check Out the Local Yoga Classes:

Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or just looking to stretch out after a long flight, the daily yoga classes are a great way to start or end your day. At around £8, it’s a good way to tap into that beachy zen vibe.

Go for the Local Cuisine

Hiriketiya has some amazing local food, but if you want to try something healthier, many restaurants offer fresh seafood, tropical fruits, and Sri Lankan rice and curry. It’s an excuse to eat like a local, and trust me, you’ll want to!

Pace Yourself on the Beach Bars:

Hiriketiya has a lively beach bar scene, but if you’re after a chill vibe, make sure to go when the happy hour crowd thins out a bit. That way, you can enjoy the sunset without elbowing for space by the bar.

Bring Cash

Some places don’t accept cards, especially if you’re venturing into more remote areas. It’s good to have cash on hand for smaller shops, beachside vendors, or impromptu excursions. There are a couple of ATM machines right next to the beach

Stay for the Sunset

Hiriketiya is known for its stunning sunsets, so make sure you’re on the beach or at a rooftop bar when the sun starts to dip. It’s the perfect way to end your day, with the sky turning into a masterpiece of colors

Take Your Time

The beauty of Hiriketiya is in its laid-back vibe. Whether you’re surfing, swimming, or just enjoying the views, don’t rush it. Chill out, take a deep breath, and soak it all in.

What To Pack:

Most places are pretty casual, and the weather is warm year-round, so pack light and comfy. Also, a good pair of flip-flops or sandals will be your best friend for strolling when exploring Hiriketiya Sri Lanka (click here for beach babe vibe one piece swimsuit inspiration)

Final Thoughts:

So, what’s the verdict? Can a die-hard city and jungle lover be converted to a beach enthusiast? Well, I’m not saying I’m packing my bags for a life of constant sun and sand, but exploring Hiriketiya Sri Lanka, definitely changed my mind about what a beach destination can be. With its mix of tranquility, local charm, wildlife and just enough adventure, it’s the kind of place that might surprise you (in the best way possible).

So go ahead, make Hiriketiya your next destination. Trust me, even if you think you’re not a beach person, you’ll leave with a little piece of sand in your heart. (Or, you know, just sand in your shoes.)
