Discover the best of Mirissa – Top Things to Do

Whale Watching

If there’s one experience you absolutely cannot miss in Mirissa, it’s whale watching. This coastal town is one of the best places in the world to spot these majestic creatures, and trust me, it’s something you’ll never forget. Imagine being out on the open ocean, the sun rising over the horizon, and then—suddenly—a massive blue whale breaches the surface just meters from your boat. The best time to increase your chances of seeing these magnificent whales in the wild is between November and April. The feeling of being in the presence of such powerful creatures is unlike anything else. It’s an experience that will stay with you long after you leave.

Pro Tip – There are many companies selling Whale watching tours on the beach, while these might be cheaper, the boats are usually much more crowded. I recommend using ‘Raja & The Whales’. They charge a little more 16,000 rupees (£42), however, they limit numbers on the boats and are committed to responsible whale watching. Raja & The Whales Website

Another excellent spot for snorkeling with turtles is Thalaramba Beach, just a short drive from Mirissa’s main beach. Whether you’re flying in from abroad or traveling within Sri Lanka, here’s how you can get to this beautiful coastal town. For a more scenic and unforgettable journey, hop on a train from Colombo Fort Railway Station to Mirissa. The train ride is famous for its beautiful views of the coastline and lush landscapes. Especially as you approach the southern coast. Trains typically run several times a day, and the journey lasts about 3-4 hours. Tickets are very affordable, ranging from 200-500 LKR (£0.50 – £1.35) depending on the class (Second class seats are more comfortable). This is a great option if you want to experience the charm of Sri Lanka’s railway system.

If you’re traveling from Colombo or nearby towns like Galle or Matara, there are direct buses that run to Mirissa. The Colombo to Mirissa bus service is frequent, with departures throughout the day. The bus ride takes about 3 to 4 hours, and the cost is around 200-800 LKR. (£0.50 – £2.20).
