Treehouse Hotels in Sri Lanka: My Ultimate Review Of Recent Jungle & Eco Stays.

If you’re searching for the best treehouse hotels in Sri Lanka, you’re in the right place. On my last trip, I decided to swap city hotels and beach resorts for something completely different. A jungle adventure. I love Sri Lanka’s coast and vibrant cities, but I always try to explore somewhere new on every visit, and this time I pushed myself firmly outside my comfort zone to experience a treehouse stay… or three.

👉 If you’re planning to head down to Sri Lanka’s south coast, don’t miss my guide to the hidden beaches blog for quieter, more untouched coastal spots.

During this trip, I stayed in three very different treehouse and jungle-style hotels in Sri Lanka, covering everything from eco lodges to full luxury escapes. From incredible jungle views and wildlife encounters to some of the best food I’ve eaten in the country, this guide shares my honest experience of staying at Sigiriya King’s ResortKaala Kalaththewa Luxury Eco Resort, and VeeRaa Retreat (not strictly a treehouse, but a beautiful elevated cabin stay that absolutely deserves a place in this guide).

In this post, I’ll share what each stay was really like, the activities you can do nearby, who each hotel is best for, and whether treehouse stays in Sri Lanka are actually worth booking.

Sigiriya King’s Resort – Luxury Treehouse With a View of Lion Rock

Exterior view of Sigiriya Kings Resort treehouse

If you’re dreaming of treehouse hotels in Sri Lanka that feel adventurous but still luxurious, this was the stay that completely converted me. It was the very first stop on my little treehouse tour and, after one night here, my fear of treehouses and the great outdoors disappeared instantly (sadly it didn’t last long… but more on that later!).

I stayed in The Nest treehouse, and the moment I arrived I knew this experience was going to be special. The treehouse overlooks lush greenery and the lake, with an incredible view of Sigiriya’s famous Lion Rock in the distance. It felt private, peaceful and surprisingly indulgent, definitely a luxury treehouse stay rather than a rustic one.

Inside, the treehouse had everything you’d expect from a boutique hotel: an indoor bathroom (a big win if outdoor showers aren’t your thing), a mini bar, TV, fluffy dressing gowns and the most delicious fresh cookies waiting for me after dinner. Even better? Not a single bug or new mosquito bite during my stay, something I honestly didn’t think was possible in the jungle!

The staff were genuinely wonderful and nothing was ever too much trouble. And the food? Some of the best I’ve eaten in a hotel anywhere in Sri Lanka. If you’re someone who chooses hotels based on the dining experience, this alone is a reason to book.

Things To Do Near Sigiriya King’s Resort

One of the best things about staying here is how close you are to some of Sri Lanka’s most iconic experiences.

Climb Pidurangala Rock

View of Lion Rock Sigiriya from top of Pidurangala Rock, Sri Lanka

This was easily one of the highlights of my stay. The climb gets tough towards the top, with a bit of scrambling involved, but the views are absolutely worth it. Watching the sunrise over Sigiriya Rock with monkeys keeping me company along the trail was unforgettable. It’s also far quieter and much cheaper (2000 Lkr) than climbing Sigiriya Lion Rock, which makes it a fantastic alternative.

Night Safari to Spot the Grey Slender Loris

I booked a night safari directly through the hotel and it turned out to be one of the most unique wildlife experiences of my trip. With the help of my guide, we spotted three grey slender lorises hiding in the trees, something I would never have found on my own. If you love wildlife, this is a must-do.

Relax by the Pool With Lake Views

After a morning adventure, the infinity pool overlooking the lake is the perfect place to slow down. It’s peaceful, scenic and the ideal way to soak in the beauty of Sri Lanka’s jungle landscape.

If You Stay Longer…

If you have more time in Sigiriya, you could also add:

  • Climbing Sigiriya Lion Rock at sunrise
  • Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park safari to see elephants
  • Visiting Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • A local village or cycling tour through the countryside

I only stayed one night here and honestly wished it had been longer. If you’re looking for luxury treehouse stays in Sri Lanka that balance adventure with comfort, Sigiriya King’s Resort sets the bar incredibly high and it might just spoil you for the rest of your trip.

VeeRaa Retreat, Habarana – A Stylish Jungle Cabin With Unexpected Wildlife Encounters

Pool View at the Veeraa Retreat Habarana, Sri Lanka

My next stop on this little treehouse adventure happened slightly last minute. I was heading to the area for an elephant safari, and the hotel I originally wanted was fully booked. After a quick search, I found VeeRaa Retreat, a newly opened property that looked promising in the photos… so I decided to take a chance and book two nights.

When I arrived, the staff were incredibly welcoming and escorted me to my room and honestly, it looked even better than the photos. The design is modern, calming and beautifully done, with large rooms, plenty of storage and a boutique eco-lodge feel. This isn’t strictly a treehouse, but it definitely falls into the category of unique jungle stays in Sri Lanka.

The bathroom deserves its own mention. It was half outdoors and open to the elements, which felt luxurious and adventurous at the same time. At this point in my trip, everything was a solid five stars.

Wildlife Encounters From Your Balcony

One of the things I’ll remember most about this stay is the wildlife. While relaxing on my balcony, I started hearing a lot of commotion on the roof. After a bit of investigating, I spotted a group of purple-faced langur monkeys (including mums carrying their tiny babies) casually crossing the roof and hanging out in the tree next to my balcony.

Over the two days, this became a regular (and very welcome) soundtrack to my stay.

And then came the moment I’ll never forget…

I was sitting on the edge of the bath shaving my legs (remember, the bathroom is open to the outdoors) when a little furry face suddenly peeked over the roof and jumped onto the wall surrounding the bath. We both jumped in shock before he quickly scurried off. It was hilarious, slightly chaotic, and one of those real travel moments that you’ll laugh about forever.

Things To Know Before Booking

Breakfast here was good and the setting felt peaceful and tucked away in nature. The only thing worth noting is that nights can be a little noisy due to dogs barking in the distance. Something you notice more because the bathroom isn’t fully enclosed. But honestly, this is all part of staying in the wild, and considering the price point and the beautiful design and finish of the rooms, it felt like a fair trade-off.

If you’re looking for affordable jungle hotels in Sri Lanka that still feel stylish and unique, VeeRaa Retreat is a really lovely option. Especially if you want easy access to elephant safaris and a stay surrounded by nature.

What To Do Near VeeRaa Retreat (Safari & Culture)

If you’re staying at VeeRaa Retreat, you’re in one of the best wildlife regions in Sri Lanka, so I highly recommend staying at least two nights so you can experience more than just your safari.

Go on an Elephant Safari (The reason most people come!)

This was the whole reason I booked this stop on my treehouse tour, and it absolutely delivered. The area sits close to Minneriya National Park, Kaudulla National Park and Hurulu Eco Park, which means your hotel can recommend the best park depending on elephant movement that day (this is really important).

Hurulu Eco Park Safari – My Experience

I did a safari at Hurulu Eco Park, which cost me around £50 for the jeep & park entry fees. I had the entire jeep to myself, which made the experience feel really private and comfortable. I’m not entirely sure if this is standard or just because it was a quieter day.

From what I understood, jeep safaris in Sri Lanka are often shared between guests to reduce costs, especially in busier parks or peak season. However, in quieter periods (or if you book last minute or through your accommodation), it’s not unusual to end up with a private jeep, either by default or by chance if there aren’t other bookings.

Either way, having a private jeep meant I could take my time, stop when I wanted, and really enjoy watching the elephants without feeling rushed.

Seeing wild elephants roaming freely in huge open landscapes is one of those wow I can’t believe I’m here travel moments. If you visit during the dry season, you may even witness The Gathering, where hundreds of elephants congregate around the reservoirs, one of the biggest elephant gatherings in Asia.

Visit Sigiriya Lion Rock or Pidurangala Rock

Even if you already climbed Pidurangala earlier in your trip (like I did), this area is perfect if you still want to tick off Sigiriya Lion Rock or do sunrise again.

If you haven’t climbed either yet, I’d recommend:

  • Sigiriya Lion Rock for history and bucket-list bragging rights
  • Pidurangala Rock for the best views and a more adventurous climb

Either way, sunrise hikes here are unforgettable. You can either book an organised excursion or arrange your own transport to the park and pay the entrance fee on arrival. Both options are fairly straightforward, and it often comes down to whether you prefer everything pre-arranged or a more flexible, independent approach.

Explore Dambulla Cave Temple

About 30–40 minutes away is the Dambulla Cave Temple, one of Sri Lanka’s most impressive cultural sites. Think:

  • Giant golden Buddha
  • Ancient cave paintings
  • Hundreds of Buddha statues
  • Incredible hilltop views

It’s an easy half-day trip and a great balance to all the wildlife adventures.

Try a Sri Lankan Village Experience

This is one of the most underrated activities in the Sigiriya area and such a lovely cultural experience. You’ll typically:

  • Ride a tuk-tuk through villages
  • Cross a lake by traditional catamaran boat
  • Visit local homes
  • Learn to cook authentic Sri Lankan food

It’s touristy, yes, but also genuinely fun and a great way to understand rural life. Read more here

Relax & Enjoy the Jungle

Honestly, one of the best things to do here is simply slow down. After busy sightseeing and travel days, this region is perfect for:

  • Pool time
  • Reading on your balcony
  • Listening to jungle sounds
  • Watching monkeys swing through the trees

And trust me… you’ll appreciate this downtime after early safari starts!

Kaala Kalaththewa Eco Resort – A True Back-to-Nature Treehouse Experience

Exterior of Kaala Kalaththewa eco treehouse, Sri Lanka

This stay was my real test. I love nature, wildlife and being outdoors… but this is where I discovered my comfort zone definitely has limits.

Kaala Kalaththewa eco resort is a beautiful eco property set in peaceful countryside close to Anuradhapura, and it feels completely immersed in the jungle. If you’re searching for eco treehouse hotels in Sri Lanka, this is the kind of stay people picture, quiet, remote, natural and deeply connected to the environment.

The grounds are genuinely stunning. Everything feels calm, green and untouched, and the atmosphere is incredibly peaceful. The staff were lovely and welcoming, and even the wild chickens roaming around the property were surprisingly friendly.

The Outdoor Shower Experience (My Honest Take)

Now for the part that really tested me…

The shower was downstairs and fully outdoors. For many travellers, showering surrounded by jungle sounds would be their idea of absolute heaven. Unfortunately, I discovered it was not mine. I’m all for experiencing nature, but I also love being able to retreat back into a bit of luxury afterwards.

Let’s just say it may have been the fastest shower of my life.

That said, this is absolutely not a negative, it just depends on the type of traveller you are. If you love true eco stays and want to feel fully immersed in the jungle, you will probably adore this experience.

Magical Jungle Nights & Peaceful Days

Pool Area at Kaala Kalaththewa eco resort Sri Lanka

What I did love here was the atmosphere. The property is beautifully quiet and far away from busy tourist areas, making it perfect if you want to slow down and disconnect.

At night, the trees lit up with glow bugs, creating a natural light show that felt magical and completely unforgettable. Sitting outside listening to the sounds of the jungle with tiny lights flickering around the trees is one of those peaceful travel moments that stays with you.

The food was also lovely, fresh, home-style and comforting after a day of exploring.

Are Treehouse Hotels in Sri Lanka Worth It?

If you’re wondering whether treehouse hotels in Sri Lanka are actually worth booking. The short answer is: yes, but it depends on the type of traveller you are.

Treehouse stays in Sri Lanka range from luxury jungle lodges with hotel-level comfort to true eco experiences that immerse you completely in nature. During my trip, I experienced both ends of the spectrum, and each offered something totally different.

You’ll love treehouse stays if you:

  • Want a unique place to stay in Sri Lanka

  • Want a memorable travel experience

They may not be for you if you:

  • Dislike insects or wildlife
  • Prefer city or beach hotels
  • Need air-conditioned, fully enclosed bathrooms
  • Want nightlife or busy surroundings

For me, the luxury treehouse experience was the perfect balance of adventure and comfort.

Best Areas in Sri Lanka for Treehouse Hotels

If you’re planning a stay in one of the treehouse hotels in Sri Lanka, location makes a huge difference to your experience. Some areas are better for wildlife, others for culture, and some for pure jungle immersion.

Sigiriya / Cultural Triangle (Best Overall Choice)

This is the most popular and arguably the best area for treehouse stays in Sri Lanka.

It’s ideal for:

  • Climbing Sigiriya Lion Rock and Pidurangala Rock
  • Elephant safaris in nearby national parks
  • Visiting Dambulla Cave Temple
  • Jungle scenery and peaceful surroundings

This region offers the perfect balance of adventure, culture and nature, making it the top pick for first-time visitors.

Anuradhapura / North Central Province (Best for Peace & Culture)

If you want something quieter and more authentic, this area is perfect.

It’s best for:

  • Ancient city exploration in Anuradhapura
  • Cycling through temple ruins
  • Spiritual and cultural experiences
  • Off-the-beaten-track jungle stays

Treehouse and eco lodges here feel more remote and peaceful compared to Sigiriya.

Wilpattu National Park Area (Best for Wildlife & Leopards)

For a more rugged, safari-focused experience, Wilpattu National Park is one of the best wildlife regions in Sri Lanka.

It’s ideal for:

  • Leopard spotting (less crowded than Yala)
  • Sloth bears and crocodiles
  • Birdwatching and quiet safari experiences
  • Remote jungle eco stays

Treehouse-style accommodation near Wilpattu is perfect if your main goal is wildlife over sightseeing.

Yala National Park Area (Best for Big Safari Energy)

If you want a more famous safari experience, Yala National Park is the most well-known wildlife destination in Sri Lanka.

It’s best for:

  • Leopard safaris (one of the highest densities in the world)
  • Elephants, buffalo and crocodiles
  • Guided jeep safaris
  • More developed tourist infrastructure

Treehouse and jungle lodges near Yala often feel slightly more polished and tourist-friendly compared to Wilpattu.

Final Tip

  • Choose Wilpattu for quieter, more authentic wildlife encounters
  • Choose Yala for iconic safari experiences and high end luxury stays
  • Choose Anuradhapura for culture and peace

Each region offers a completely different version of treehouse hotels in Sri Lanka, so it’s worth choosing based on the type of trip you want.

FAQ: Treehouse Hotels in Sri Lanka

Large colorful FAQ letters

Are treehouse hotels in Sri Lanka safe?

Yes, treehouse hotels in Sri Lanka are safe and designed for guests. They are built securely with proper staircases, railings and solid structures. Many are part of boutique hotels or eco resorts with 24-hour staff on site, so you’re never truly alone in the jungle.

Do treehouse hotels in Sri Lanka have air conditioning?

It depends on the property.

  • Luxury treehouse hotels usually have air conditioning and full hotel amenities.
  • Eco treehouse stays often rely on natural airflow and fans instead.

Always check the room details before booking if air conditioning is important to you.

This is one of the biggest questions people ask! Because these hotels are surrounded by nature, insects are part of the environment. However, higher-end treehouse hotels do a great job of minimising bugs with mosquito nets, fans and clever design.

During my stays, the luxury treehouses had surprisingly few insects.

Absolutely. In fact, many treehouse hotels in Sri Lanka are incredibly romantic and perfect for:

  • Honeymoons

I recommend staying at least 2 nights.
This gives you time to:

  • Enjoy the hotel and surroundings
  • Go on a safari or explore nearby attractions
  • Actually relax and experience the jungle atmosphere

One night simply isn’t enough (I learned this the hard way!).

Do treehouse hotels in Sri Lanka have WiFi?

Most do, especially luxury and mid-range properties. Speeds can vary due to remote locations, but it’s usually good enough for messaging and light browsing.
