Is Siem Reap Cambodia Worth The Trip? My full guide & honest experience.

With so many countries on my radar I can sometimes find it difficult to choose where my next trip will take me. I mean I have my ‘go to’ countries like Thailand & Sri Lanka, but sometimes I fancy a change. I knew I was already going to be in Thailand. Looking at my itinerary I could see I had a few days with no plans and thought it would be the perfect opportunity to explore somewhere new. This somewhere needed to be a short flight away, cheap to get to and have plenty to do. So I narrowed it down to Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar. After a quick bit of research I choose Siem Reap in Cambodia. So join me as I share my unforgettable mini adventure, and ultimately answer the big question: is Siem Reap, Cambodia really worth the trip?

Is Siem Reap Cambodia worth a visit?

Need Help Planning The Perfect Trip

I want to make it easy for anyone. Regardless of budget, travel experience, or group size—to confidently plan a memorable trip from start to finish.

Why I Choose Siem Reap, Cambodia?

Type “Cambodia travel” into Google and you’ll be bombarded with photos of ancient temples cloaked in mystery, dreamy beaches, and endless lists of things to do. That was all it took to spark my curiosity and before I knew it, I’d booked a ridiculously cheap flight with Air Cambodia. They had a sale on at the time and I snapped up return flights for under £200! (Emirates appears to have some of the cheapest prices at the moment)

I was craving a destination rich in history and culture, easy to get around, and gentle on the budget. Cambodia ticked all the boxes. As soon as I started reading more, I felt that familiar flutter of travel butterflies. I couldn’t wait to explore and find out for myself: is Siem Reap really worth a visit?

Arriving in Siem Reap: First Impressions & Unexpected Tuk Tuk Charm

The flight from Bangkok took just over an hour, and I’d pre-arranged a transfer from the airport to my hotel. I was expecting a car, but instead, a cheerful gentleman jumped out of a tuk tuk, holding a sign with my name on it, and helped me load my bags into the back. Luckily, I was travelling light, otherwise that ride might have been a bit more of an adventure!

Straight away, I felt the shift in energy compared to the hustle and chaos of Bangkok. Siem Reap had a slower, calmer vibe that I instantly loved.

25 minutes later I arrived at Model Residence and Spa, I was welcomed like royalty. After settling into my room, I sat on the bed and thought, yep, I’ve made the right choice. The only slight downside, and it’s not really a downside if you’re after peace and quiet — is that the hotel isn’t right in the centre of town. But I had the number of the same friendly driver who picked me up from the airport, and for under $10 a day, he was happy to take me wherever I needed to go. It honestly worked out perfectly.

Sunrise at Angkor Wat: Magic, Mishaps & a Pair of Elephant Trousers

No trip to Siem Reap is complete without witnessing sunrise at Angkor Wat. So, like every good tourist, I set my alarm for an unholy hour and climbed into a tuk tuk while it was still pitch black outside. The streets were quiet, the air surprisingly cool, and I was feeling that mix of sleepiness and excitement you only get on travel days.

But then… Cambodia had other plans.

On the way to the temple, a few tuk tuks, including mine, were pulled over by the police. I stayed seated in the back, watching as my driver spoke with the officers. He seemed calm, so I followed his lead. After about 20 minutes of polite back-and-forth, we were cleared to continue with a wave and a smile. Only in Cambodia, right?

The delay meant I didn’t get a front-row spot at the reflecting pool, and the sun was already creeping up by the time I arrived. But honestly, it didn’t matter. The atmosphere was still so serene and peaceful. Watching the temple slowly light up in soft golden hues, surrounded by people quietly taking it all in. It was one of those rare travel moments that feels both ancient and alive.

Exploring Ankor Wat Siem Reap

Ticket Price – 1 day pass $37 or a 3 day pass for $62 (I purchased my ticket on arrival at the ticket office).

From there, I went straight into Angkor Wat and spent the next few hours exploring the ancient ruins. The craftsmanship was absolutely stunning. Every carving, every stone had this quiet, powerful presence. And the best part? It wasn’t too crowded. I could take my time, snap some decent photos without strangers in the background, and just soak it all in.

But oh my goodness, it was hot.

Now, I usually handle heat pretty well, but by the end I was seriously flagging. If you’re planning to go, take plenty of water, and maybe a small towel to mop your face, because you’ll need it.

Near the temple exit, I stumbled across a small stall selling loose cotton trousers. Although I hadn’t planned to shop, the heat convinced me otherwise. For a few dollars, I picked up some floaty trousers (yes, elephant print of course). I still wear them now. A stylish little souvenir with a purpose — win-win.

Siem Reap After Dark: Night Markets, Street Food & a Surprise New Year Soaking

The Elephant Trousers 🙂

Later that day, I headed into town to explore Siem Reap’s buzzing night markets. The vibe was completely different from the peaceful temples that morning. Colourful lights, music drifting through the air, and the mouthwatering smell of street food everywhere. I sampled grilled skewers, fresh spring rolls, and something totally unidentifiable but absolutely delicious. The energy was infectious, and I couldn’t stop smiling as I wandered from stall to stall looking for a special piece of artwork to bring home. (My walls are filled with art, reminding me of all the places I have visited).

By pure chance, I just happened to be in town during Khmer New Year, although I didn’t realise it at first. As I was stepping out of a little shop on Pub Street, a group of very cheerful locals ran up and started spraying me with water. Before I could even process what was happening, someone tossed powder on my head. I stood there, drenched and laughing, as the street turned into a full-blown celebration.

Thankfully, it was towards the end of my night, and honestly? It was such a fun, unexpected moment. Everyone was so lovely and welcoming. It felt less like a tourist experience and more like being pulled into something local and joyful. A perfect little travel memory.

Unexpected Adventures & BBQ Surprises: A Taste of the Real Cambodia

I was only supposed to be in Cambodia for three days, but the universe had other plans. I woke up the next morning to a message from the airline saying my flight had been cancelled. Oddly enough, I wasn’t even mad. I was actually delighted to have an extra day to explore. Siem Reap was ticking all the boxes, and thanks to how affordable everything was, I was still well within budget.

The hotel staff were amazing. They helped me rearrange my flight and, bonus — I got to stay in the same room.

I’d seen temples, wandered the night markets, and soaked up the town’s energy. Now, I wanted to see something more authentic. I called my trusty driver, Pi, and after about 20 minutes of trying to explain what I meant by “real Cambodia,” he smiled and said, “I know where to go.”

I do love a mystery tour.

About 25 minutes later, we pulled over beside a huge field bursting with pink lotus flowers. Pi pointed and smiled. We wandered over to a small wooden hut on the roadside, where we were greeted by the loveliest local family. Within minutes, I found myself walking through the lotus field, where workers were carefully picking out the flower seeds.

Completely new to me, Pi explained these lotus seeds are edible. Packed with protein and loaded with health benefits. One of the workers offered me a pod to try. I cautiously nibbled on one… and honestly? Not much flavour — it was more of a texture thing. But I was still fascinated.

BBQ Anyone?

Back at the hut, the family had started grilling something over a little BBQ. I joked that whatever they were cooking smelled amazing. A few moments later, they handed me a skewer.

“What is it?” I asked.

With a big smile, they said, “Rat.

Not quite the answer I was expecting.

siem-reap-cambodia-worth-the-trip

I tried to politely decline, but they were so proud and so kind that I didn’t want to offend them. I looked at Pi for reassurance — he nodded. So, I took a deep breath… and a bite.

Let’s just say, BBQ rat is not for me.

It was one of those comedy moments. I was chewing and smiling and nodding like I was loving it, while mentally begging myself to just swallow it. I think they picked up on my expression, because soon enough we were all laughing together.

To be honest, it probably wasn’t even that bad. It’s just, once you know what you’re eating, the brain kicks in. Maybe in a blindfold taste test I’d feel differently!

Still, moments like this are what travel is all about. Unexpected, real, and a little bit wild.

Now for the good, the bad, and the unexpected

siem-reap-cambodia-worth-the-trip

The good: The people. So friendly, warm, and genuinely welcoming. And everything is incredibly affordable — meals, massages, temple passes. It’s a dream for budget travellers.

The bad: The heat. It’s brutal, especially when you’re wandering temple ruins for hours. Come prepared with water, sunscreen, and possibly a small fan.

The unexpected: How peaceful Siem Reap can feel despite being a tourist hub. Just a short ride from the centre, and you’ll find quiet streets, monks walking by, and a slower, calmer rhythm of life I totally didn’t expect and absolutely loved.

Final Thoughts: So, is Siem Reap Cambodia Worth The Trip?

In a word — absolutely.

What started as a short 3-day stopover turned into one of the most unexpected and memorable adventures I’ve had. Siem Reap surprised me in the best ways: ancient temples steeped in history, buzzing night markets full of life, affordable luxury, and spontaneous moments with kind-hearted locals that I’ll never forget (rat skewers and all!).

It’s not just about Angkor Wat, although that alone is worth the trip. It’s the little things: the tuk tuk rides, the lotus fields, the genuine smiles, the calm pace of life compared to nearby cities, and how easy it is to travel here on a budget.

If you’re wondering whether Siem Reap is worth visiting in 2025, my honest answer is yes. Go with an open mind, a curious heart, and a decent tolerance for heat and you might just come home with your own unexpected stories.

I definitely want to go back. Next time to explore Cambodia’s beautiful beaches, like those on Koh Rong, and maybe even head into the jungles of Mondulkiri for a chance to spot wild gibbons. There’s still so much more of this country to uncover!
