The first thing that struck me was the peacefulness. Even though it’s still under development, there’s an openness and calm that you don’t always find in busy cities. I loved walking across Slvar footbridge and along the promenade. Where you get a clear view of the ocean on one side and the towering cranes and construction sites on the other. It’s not just a place to shop—it’s a whole experience.
Located just a stone’s throw from Galle Face Green, the mall stands out with its sleek, contemporary design. It’s clear that this place was built to impress, but it doesn’t feel overwhelming. Instead, it has a welcoming vibe with wide open spaces. Combined with views of the ocean, that make you forget you’re right in the heart of Colombo. Walking around, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement. There’s something about this blend of modern luxury and traditional Sri Lankan charm that really sets the mall apart.

If you’re like me and enjoy local flavors, I recommend heading down to the food court in the basement level. You can find everything from freshly made rice & curry to Seafood dishes. It’s the perfect spot to sample Sri Lankan street food, but with a bit more comfort and style. I treated myself to a warm, delicious plate of rice and curry, and it was the ideal mix of comfort and flavor.
I also loved discovering places like Big Plate and Life’s Good Kitchen, which quickly became go-to spots when I wanted something a little different but still full of flavour. And then there’s Sunday brunch at Barefoot Garden Cafe, such a laid-back, feel-good experience that perfectly captures Colombo’s creative side. Honestly, if you’re even slightly into food, this city makes it very easy to fall in love.
There are of course a number of International brands available in the Mall, including Pizza Hut, KFC, Robinsons to sample. If you’re in the mood for dining with a view, head up to the roof top terrace.

What I really appreciated about One Galle Face Mall was that it wasn’t just about shopping. It was a full experience. I stumbled upon a Cineplex. For families or those with kids, the mall has a playful vibe, with a fun little play area for younger ones to burn off some energy.
6. Pettah (Colombo 2): The Bustling Market District
In complete contrast to One Galle Face Mall, Pettah is Colombo’s traditional trading hub. It’s where you’ll find the heart of local commerce. It’s chaotic with a capital C, colorful, and full of life. The Pettah Market is a sensory overload, with everything from fresh produce and spices to textiles and electronics.
If you’re looking for an authentic Sri Lankan experience and one that features in my top 10 things to do in Colombo, this is the place to be. Wander the narrow streets, haggle for a bargain and then when it’s time for refreshments head over to Dutch Hospital. Not much in the way of shopping at the old Dutch Hospital, but it’s a great place to go for drinks at the many trendy eateries and admire the architecture of the building.
🔷 Helpful tip – Pettah market can be reached on foot from Colombo Fort Railway Station.

Continuing with the theme top things to do in Colombo. I have another suggestion for you. For those who love green spaces and a more peaceful side of the city, Cinnamon Gardens (Colombo 7) is a must-visit. This affluent residential area is known for its leafy streets, stunning colonial-era mansions, and elegant embassies.
Take a walk through Viharamahadevi Park, Colombo’s largest and most well-kept park. Or visit the National Museum and town Hall to get a deeper insight into Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage.
And, after all that sightseeing take a cake and coffee break at Paradise Road Cafe. It is a little on the pricy side, but worth it just to cool down from the heat outside. The cakes are pretty good too. Just a little side note, the cafe is upstairs and there is no lift in the building.
If you need a little more time to relax, I highly recommend ‘White by Spa Ceylon‘ for a little spa treatment. They do amazing foot & neck massages. So good they make you feel like you are walking on air and can face anything life throws at you.
Sticking with the Colombo 7 area a little longer. Bit of a random one, Arpico Super Centre on Hyde Park Corner is worth a visit. Not necessarily something I would feature as a top 10 thing to do when in Colombo. Just more of a good to know. You can find all your food, alcohol essentials, tea, spices and herbs to take home with you. The store also has a small pharmacy inside.

Continuing with the top 10 things to in Colombo, why not squeeze in a visit to the Lotus Tower. If you’re looking for a bird’s-eye view of Colombo and an iconic landmark that perfectly captures the city’s modern energy, the Lotus Tower should be on your list. Standing tall at 350 meters, it’s not just the tallest structure in Sri Lanka. Its also a symbol of the country’s growing ambition and progress. I had the chance to visit, and I have to say—it’s an experience you won’t forget.
The first thing that hits you when you step into the Lotus Tower is the view. From the observation deck, you’re treated to panoramic vistas of Colombo and the surrounding coastline. The tower itself is designed to resemble a blooming lotus flower, with vibrant purple petals that stand out against the city’s skyline. As I looked out over the city, I could see everything from the bustling streets to the shimmering blue waters of the Indian Ocean stretching into the horizon.
The view is breathtaking during the day, but I highly recommend visiting closer to sunset. Watching the golden hues of the sun reflecting off the ocean while the city lights begin to twinkle is something truly special. It’s one of those moments where you feel like you’re on top of the world, and it offers a great opportunity for photos.

The Lotus Tower is more than just an observation deck. It offers a variety of experiences for visitors. On the way up, I passed through a few floors with interactive exhibits that highlight Sri Lanka’s cultural and technological advancements.
There’s also a revolving restaurant at the top, where you can enjoy a meal with the best view in the city. I didn’t dine there during this visit, but I can only imagine how amazing it would be to have dinner while the city slowly turns beneath you. Colombo has so many options when it comes to dining out. The city offers a rich tapestry of flavors that will leave any food lover in a state of pure bliss. From street food stalls to high end restaurants, the city really is a culinary playground. The stretch of beach here, though not as pristine as some of Sri Lanka’s more remote shores, still offers a relaxed vibe and stunning ocean views. Better still this area can offer more budget friendly dining options. One of my favorites is ‘Barracuda Seafood & Grill’.
10. Explore Mount Lavinia and its Beachfront Vibes
Just a short drive from the city center, Mount Lavinia offers a much-needed respite with its beautiful beaches and historical charm. This area is best known for the iconic Mount Lavinia Hotel, a colonial-era property overlooking the Indian Ocean. Whether you’re lounging on the beach, enjoying a seafood dinner with a view, or simply strolling along the coastline, Mount Lavinia provides a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of Colombo.
🔷 Helpful Tip – Bring a towel and blanket as there are no sun loungers available on the main beach. However, a few of the restaurants along the beach edge offer sun loungers for a small fee (Sugar Beach).
